Three Reasons Why Fluoride Is Bad For You

Fluoride is a natural mineral with the chemical formula . It consists of only one atom of fluorine. Toothpaste is one of the most important products we know that contain fluoride. The types of fluoride used in toothpaste are stannous fluoride and sodium fluoride. Besides toothpaste two other important products that we use daily are our food, and water. They also contain fluoride.

Fluoride is used in toothpaste, and water to decrease tooth decay, by strengthening the protective surface around all your teeth. Fluoride also works during the demineralization and remineralization processes that continually occur in your mouth. Demineralization is when there are too much acids in your spittle, for example after you are done eating, and the fluoride is there to decompose the calcium and phosphorous under the tooth’s surface.

Remineralization is when your spittle does not contain enough acid and the fluoride replenish calcium and phosphorous to keep your teeth hard [1] .The use of fluoride in toothpaste and other oral products was even endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA). Previously two types of fluoride where cited, stannous and sodium fluoride. Stannous fluoride was the most effective at reducing the amount of bacteria that is present in plaque, plaque is formed on the teeth and the gum. The problem with stannous fluoride was that it left stains on teeth and other dental appliances.

However the sodium fluoride does not leave stains on teeth and other dental appliances this type of fluoride hasn’t completely replaced stannous fluoride. The small amount of fluoride in toothpaste is good for your health, but too much is harmful for young children. They can get nauseous, and fluoride can cause permanent white spots on developing teeth. The tooth defect caused by a large amount of fluoride intake is called dental fluorosis. This tooth defect has increased all over the world especially the U.S. It appears as a range of visual changes in enamel causing degrees of intrinsic tooth discoloration, and, in some cases, physical damage to the teeth. The severity of the condition is dependent on the dose, duration, and age of the individual during the exposure. [2]

Fluoride in our foods (and drinks):

It was previously stated that fluoride is added to water. Even if your community does not use fluoride in drinking water, once fluoride is added massively to water, it winds in almost all processed beverages and foods.

Fluoride also has a toxic effect, that’s why it is used in pesticide to kill insects and pests. Some of the products that can contain fluoride because fluoride is used as pesticide on them are: cocoa powder, grape products, dried fruit, walnuts and dried beans.

During the mechanical deboning process meat gets separated mechanically. Due to the contamination from bone particles this meat can contain traces/ levels of fluoride. Examples of meat that undergoe this process are fish sticks, nuggets, and chicken fingers.

Tea plants absorb fluoride from the soil, which results in a high level of fluoride in brewed black tea and iced tea. Excessive tea consumption can lead to skeletal fluorosis (a bone disease) caused by excessive tea intake.

Reasons why fluoride is dangerous:

  1. · Too much fluoride causes damage to the brain and central nervous system. The brain damage it can cause is lowering of the IQ. The combination of fluoride and aluminum in drinking water can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
  2. · Influences the risk of different types of cancer especially bone cancers.
  3. · May interfere with sexual development. Early puberty may lead to short stature issues and to an increased risk of breast cancer.


After this research you can ask yourself the question “what does not contain fluoride?” Seems like everything contains fluoride. Even if you buy fresh fruit chances are that they were sprayed with pesticide that contains fluoride. Even if I drink spring water, which contains a lesser amount of fluoride, all other fluoride containing products that we use daily can increase the amount of fluoride in our body. Most of us drink water every day, everyone eats fruit or food every day, and washes their mouth every day.

How can we decrease the amount of fluoride intake? There are a lot of reasons why fluoride is dangerous. There are more reasons than the ones cited in this article. Too reduce fluoride in our food, oral products and drinking water is a big challenge. In the beginning fluoride was used for good things like, reducing cavity decay, and used as pesticide for pests on fruit and vergetables. But now it is time to reduce the amount of fluoride used, and put in our products.

A few reasons why fluoride is dangerous are not supported because there is a lack of evidence to show that this is true. There are big organizations that supported the use of fluoride in the early years. This makes it more difficult to force a reduction in the use of fluoride. Even if communities stop putting fluoride in drinking water, there is already a high amount of fluoride in other products and in our water. People still use fluoride, but need to understand that they have to reduce the amount in processed food, and beverages.
